He was predeceased by: his parents, Ada S. Thorpe and Sylvester Hickman; and his siblings, Mable Jones, Robert Thorpe and Sylvester Thorpe Jr. Ernest.

He is survived by: his children, Diane M. Smith (George), Denise Montgomery, Vanessa Peele (Windell), Elanda Rodgers, Carolyn Harris (Randy), Bernard Thorpe (Marjorie) and Ernest Thorpe Jr. (Kimberly); his stepson Tony Bowers; and his sisters-in-law, Barbara Bowers, Roberta Matthews and Edna Holliman. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
