He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, William H Bowden and Edith Lewark; his child Shirley Robbins; and his grandchildren, Scott (Stephanie), Matt Robbins, Clay, Whitney and Avery of Va Beach.
In 2009, Gov. Mike Easley presented Ernie with the highest civilian award in the state of NC, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, for his many contributions to the state.
