He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Cleo Elder and Pauline Elder (Gates); his wife Dolores; his children, Sarah (Bryan Shaw), Susan (Charles McLean) and Charles; his grandson Ian; and his siblings, Sharon Minton, Paula Elder and Richard Elder.

“My deepest sympathies on the passing of your husband and father. Gary was my Division Chief in Groton CT. He was a great leader, a good friend, and had such a positive impact at the command through his friendly demeanor and genuine concern for his subordinates. Gary was my sponsor when I made Chief and I credit him with teaching me how to lead and be successful in a Navy career. He talked very fondly of Delores and his daughters, and I'm sure he was very proud of them.”
