She was predeceased by : her parents, Nathaniel Gay and Gracie Gay; her husband Raymond Lee Patterson; her sons, Ruben and Raymond Jr.; her granddaughter Shaniqua Denay Patterson; and her siblings, William Allen Gay, Nathaniel Gay Jr., Fred Gay, Leslie Gay, Thomas Gay, Elnora Gay, Doris Urquhart and Phyllis Ruffin.

She is survived by : her cousin Deaconess Nell N. Patterson; her children, Elizabeth Judkins (James), Peggy Purdie, Kathy Patterson of Wakefield, Virginia, Janet Loretta Patterson, Valarie Patterson-Ricks of Waverly, Virginia and Kelvin Patterson (Lisa) of Wakefield, Virginia; her stepson Allen Tonkins of Waverly, Virginia; her siblings, Gladys Stringfield of Surry, Louise Stith of Wakefield, Virginia and Richard Gay of Windsor, Virginia; her stepsister Donell Hillard of Waverly, Virginia; her siblings-in-law, Dorothy Gay of Wakefield, Barbara Gay of Norfolk and James Ruffin of Warrenton; and her goddaughter Myesha Britton of Wakefield, Virginia.. She is also survived by grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
