He was predeceased by: his parents, Lou Alice Dunn Smith and James Dennis Smith of Herndon, VA; his uncle Olan Smith; and his aunt Martha Dunn (Ms). He is survived by: his daughters, Kristen Pappano and Patricia Golden; his grandchildren, Madison Pappano, Mitchell Pappano, Megan Golden and Jacob Golden; his siblings, Joyce Smith, Paul Smith and Ray Smith; and his former wife Mary Ellen Sherburne. He is also survived by two nieces and three nephews.
