He was predeceased by: his mother Anne Kane Thiel; his parents-in-law, Aylvin and Louise Foster; his brother John Thiel; his brother-in-law Joseph Wisemiller; his niece Megan Thiel; his nephew Lee Gard; his brother-in-law H. Lee Gard; and his friends, Jerry Rex and John Hackney.

He is survived by: his siblings, August, Anne Thiel and Martin; his wife Robyn Thiel; his children, Amy Thiel, Elizabeth Thiel Mather and Michael Mather; his grandchildren, Coby, Lou, Jackson and Owen Mather; his siblings, Kathryn Thiel (Wisemiller) and Paul Thiel; his siblings-in-law, Poconna Thiel, Brenda Levy, Beth Saar, Gary Saar, Anita Thiel and Annie Thiel Rex; Georgiana Kornwolf and Armand Levy. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
