He was predeceased by: his parents, Al Van and Sarah Carter Sykes; his wife Barbara Johnson; his daughter-in-law Kim; and his siblings, Kezia Griffin, Jessie Johnson, Marjorie White, Elsie DiBenedetto, Ida Sykes, Mary Wood, Susie Ledford, Alvin Lee Sykes, Quesnel Sykes, John Sykes and Charles Sykes.
He is survived by: his children, David Sykes Jr., Amanda Sykes, Al Sykes and Brian Sykes; his grandchildren, Ethan Sykes (Alice), Nick Sykes (Bea), Heather Sykes Meier (Kyle) and Elton Sykes (Jermarion); his great grandchildren, Mia, Emmaline and Lydia; and his siblings, Jimmie Sykes and Shirley Jackson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that people make donations to Yorktown Baptist Church.
