David August Barnebl Obituary

David passed away January 6, 2022 after a short illness. David leaves behind his loving wife, Linda, of 49 years. Born July 20, 1943 in Newark, N.J. the son of Vesta Loose Barnebl and August C. Barnebl, David grew up in Chicago discovering an early love of music in many forms, mainly playing the trombone. His family moved to Stamford, CT where he graduated from Stamford High School as an excellent student, playing in the band and orchestra, playing in a professional band, as well as caddying at a local golf course. David graduated from the University of Connecticut with a B.F.A. and M.A. degree in Music Composition. He taught in the music department of Rutgers University and later became head of the electronic music department at Binghamton University. David met his loving wife at Binghamton University in 1971 and was married to Linda in 1972. Their marriage was a true partnership, working together in all areas and aspects of their lives.

With David's strong interest in math, he turned to the financial world of Financial Planning and joined Paine, Webber, Jackson and Curtis, which later became UBS, in the early 70's in New York City. He earned the Certified Financial Planning certification, becoming a financial planner, giving seminars and helping with safe investments to help meet their financial goals. His love of numbers and people was a winning formula.

His client base was strong, trusting and long lasting. As a Senior Vice President of Investments at UBS, he welcomed the challenges and responsibility in assisting clients with safe investments.

While living in New York City for 15 years, David and Linda enjoyed a full life of concerts, ballets, art events, wonderful restaurants and city life before moving to Westchester County. David moved his business from New York City to Stamford, CT to be closer to his parents' needs. David and Linda joined the AIWF (American Institute of Wine and Food) learning and enjoying great food and wine together along with making new friends.

David and Linda took up ballroom dancing as a hobby and found great pleasure in taking on the physical challenges with David's great love of music. To go ballroom dancing became regular weekend activity. David and Linda achieved a 1st class level at the Vermont Symphony Waltz Night securing 1st place awards.

David retired from UBS in 2007 completing 30 plus years working with his wife, his forever partner. During David's financial career, he was instrumental in helping establish the Doris G. Quinn Foundation with his client of many years. The principal mission of the Foundation was to aid in funding the final years of completion of the Ph.D. in history, the writing year. David served as a trustee and later C.E.O. of the Foundation since 1985. The Foundation has continued to help outstanding Ph.D. candidates in history in the top history departments throughout the U.S. The Doris G. Quinn Fellowship has become a coveted award for many exceptional students.

Throughout retirement, David and Linda have continued the Foundation's mission while continuing their enjoyment of ballroom dancing, wine and food education and enjoying many gatherings with family and new friends.

Life in Panton, VT presented new challenges like running a tractor to cut the grass, learning and dealing with wildlife, and many fun outdoor activities. Many trips to Montreal were enjoyed with friends and family discovering excellent cuisine and big city atmosphere that David knew and enjoyed. David rekindled his craft of music composition in retirement, along with much listening to music, reading novels by Robin Cook, daily running, going to concerts, art museums and, of course, finding really good restaurants, his life was full and active.

David really enjoyed meeting people; always curious about who they were, what they did and what made them tick. He enjoyed learning from people. His sense of humor was keen and enjoyed by many. He fully enjoyed life, put energy into it and treasured the results. His family will remember him as an entertainer, advisor, encourager and family Sommelier! He created many moments of laughter. His smile and joyful eyes will be remembered by his family along with his continued interest in the lives of others, especially encouraging his nieces and nephews to pursue their professional journeys with vigor and passion, a true strength of his.

Beside his forever partner, Linda, David leaves behind Steven Kostka, (nephew), his dear sister-in-law, Jean-Marie Martell, nieces Roberta Martell Couture, (Dan), Theresa Martell Fallon, (Richard), Carolyn Martell Ricker, (Jason), Susan Martell Sicignano, (Robert), nieces and nephew, Danielle Couture, Hannah Couture, Abigail Couture, Emma Ricker, Colby Ricker, Shannon Fallon, and Gabrielle Sicignano, and many longtime friends and business associates.. David is predeceased by his parents and sister Lynn Barnebl Kostka.

Sincere thanks to all the medical and support staff at The Arbors, who provided excellent and abundant care in David's final moments in life.

Closing burial service will take place at Resurrection Park Cemetery in the spring.
