It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Gretchen Davis Hammer in White River Junction, Vermont, who passed away on June 11, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving to mourn family and friends. She was predeceased by: her parents, Laurence Davis and Helen Davis (Graves); her siblings, Canon James Davis and Patricia Hoffman (Davis); her sisters-in-law, Jean Davis and Diane Davis; and her son-in-law Dick Lessard.
She is survived by: her husband Kenneth Frederick Hammer; her brother Franklin Davis; her sister-in-law Karol Hammer Thurber; her children, Karin Hammer-Williamson (Laurence Dean), Laurence Hammer (Angelica), Karol Hammer, Peter Hammer (Erik Lowman) and Richard Hammer (Stacey); her foster daughter Judy Lessard (Mark Johnson); her grandchildren, Bailey, Chase, Evan, Dylan, Olive, Rose, Naomi, Nathan, Joshua, Jakob and Drew; her great grandchildren, Sam, Lily, Ben, Ellie and Skylee; and her cousin Carolyn Mugar. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 20th 2025 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Sayles Funeral Home (525 Summer St, St Johnsbury, VT 05819). A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 21st 2025 at 10:30 AM at the South Church (1052 Main St, St Johnsbury, VT 05819).
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that any remembrance of Gretchen be made in her honor to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital or to St. Johnsbury Academy — institutions very close to her heart.
