He was predeceased by: his parents, Alexander J. Smith and Lillian G. Smith; and his daughter Carrie Cowles Dougan. He is survived by: his wife Mary Ann Cowles; his children, Brian (Michelle), Christine, Jeffery Smith and Todd Cowles (Holly); his grandchildren, Joshua of Zachary, T. J., Jordan, Aidan, Graham, Sara, Katie and Emma; his siblings, Nowell Smith (Pat) and Maureen Haggen; his niece Rene Smith; his great-niece Marlena Byers; his siblings' children, Nicole Gibbon (Tom) and Tyler Haggen; and his son-in-law Mike Dougan (Lynda).

He had battled Parkinson's Disease for just under two years.
