“I was a client of Dr. Funabiki several years ago. I had been suffering from severe PTSD for a long time as the result of many traumatic events in my life. I was unable to work and I could hardly leave the house. My life was reduced to obsessively trying to control my environment in order to feel safe, and self destructive coping mechanisms when I could not. Years of traditional talk therapy were not effective for me. When my husband and I moved to Moscow, and I discovered there was an EMDR therapist in Pullman, Washington, it was an answer to prayer. I remember asking an acquaintance about Dr. Funabiki, and was told not to get my hopes up because he was booked with so many clients. I called his office anyway, and he agreed to take me on as a client. Again, another answer to prayer. EMDR with Dr. Funabiki was life changing for me. In the initial sessions as we discussed the time line of the bad things that had happened, there were a few times his eye brows went up and his jaw dropped. I laughed because this was very validating for me, to have a therapist of his education and experience be shocked at what I was telling him. After several EMDR therapy sessions, I had improved considerably but had used up all my behavioral health visits with my insurance. Dr. Funabiki contacted my insurance company and got approval for additional visits to finish my treatment. I continue to improve even though it’s been several years since my last EMDR session. I am able to work, to interact with people, and to be in the public. I am grieved beyond words at this tragedy and my deepest sympathy to his family and everyone this has touched. Dr. Funabiki and EMDR helped free me from the prison of PTSD. Thank you, Dean, for making time for me. You gave me my life back, and for that I will always be grateful.”

“My favorite memory involving Dean was one of the earliest interactions that we had. He went to a conference in Lake Chelan with Jennifer, and I took the opportunity to clean the house. It was during the summer, and it was hot, and I often get overheated anyway. At some point, all I had on were my boxer shorts because I was alone in the house. Jen called me to let me know that she was going to be home in about an hour, so I knew what time I needed to get fully dressed again. Suddenly, way before an hour had passed, there was a knock on the door and I looked through the side window and saw Jen. I figured it’s no big deal to just answer the door for her, so I did. What I didn’t know was that Dean was trailing behind, helping her with her luggage. He took a look at me, his eyes got very big, and he wordlessly turned around and pretty much ran to his car. Every time we remembered this event, the laughs we shared were just as hearty as the first time we talked about it. You are all in my heart right now, and I hope that every day brings some comfort to you. Paul”
