He was predeceased by: his wife Kamla Atal. He is survived by: his daughters, Alka Atal-Barrio and Namita Paranjothi; his son-in-law Suresh Paranjothi; and his grandchildren, Jyotica Barrio, Niguel Barrio, Ananth Paranjothi and Sonali Paranjothi.
His contributions to linear predictive coding (LPC) and code-excited linear prediction (CELP) became foundational technologies for modern telecommunications and mobile devices, touching billions of lives worldwide.
