He is survived by: his wife Rita Rae Hanratty; his sons, Ira Schmidt Jr., Kenneth Schmidt, Daniel Schmidt and David Schmidt; his grandchildren, Kenneth Schmidt Jr., Katherine Travis, Heather Schmidt, Ira Schmidt III, Levi Schmidt and Kendra Bork; and his brother Lee Schmidt. He is also survived by 10 great grandchildren.
