He was predeceased by: his grandparents, John, Jeanette Plagerman, William and Nella Shagren; his father-in-law Maurice DeBoer; his nephew Zachary De Young; and his great-niece Geneva Weinert.

He is survived by: his parents, William Shagren and Lois Shagren (Plagerman); his child Dakota; his siblings, Susan Brandsma (Duane), Sally Heppner (Brian), Traci Witman (Blake) and Justin Merrill (Shari); and his grandchildren, Dakota, Sarah Shagren (Lucy), Trey, Katelyn Shagren (Beckett), Cauy and Libby Shagren.
