He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Gerrit VanHulzen and Annetta VanHulzen; his wife Mary; his children, Jennifer Gontjes (Joel) and Jon VanHulzen (Leanne); his grandchildren, Jaymes Gontjes (Kendra), Jansen Gontjes (Amber), Emma Gontjes, Riley VanHulzen and Ellie VanHulzen; and his siblings, Nancy Westra (Jerry) and Jim VanHulzen (Laura). He was also cherished by brothers- and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, their families, and many friends.

Even though Gary struggled with Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's at the end of his life, he remained strong in spirit and lived out his signature blessing: "Keep the Faith.".
