He was predeceased by: his parents, Ben Hamstra and Gertrude Hamstra; his wife Mary Ellen; and his brothers-in-law, Robert DeGroot, Robert Cobb and John Cobb.

He is survived by: his children, David Hamstra (Jacqueline), Kaylene Schiller, Susan Burri (David) and Michael Hamstra; his grandsons, Eric Schiller (Kristen Patterson), Alex Schiller (Allison) and Addison Schiller (Madeline MacLeod); his stepgrandchildren, Sarah Bouchereau (Carl), Brendan Scott (Marleigh), Alex Scott (Rachel) and Michelle Scott; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Layla, Madeleine, Isaac and Daisy; his sister Gayle DeGroot; and his sisters-in-law, Lena Marie VanderGriend (Mick), Henrietta Cobb and Hattie Cobb.
