“I learned of Doug’s passing only a year after the fact, but I write this note to express my gratitude for his teaching and the support he gave me as a graduate student from his arrival at the University of Washington until my doctoral graduation in 1988. Doug’s brilliance and humor helped to make me “marketable” in a time when the job-listings were shrinking, and for his guidance I remain extremely grateful. I also send my sincere condolences to Helene and to all who will miss him.”
