On Saturday, Sep. 18, 2021, our father died peacefully in his sleep at age 73 with his loving family by his side. Rodney had just been released from the hospital and was recovering at home after having a kidney removed. He had been being treated for bladder and kidney cancer.
He was born Oct 17, 1947, in Walla Walla, Washington, the youngest son of Clyde Metzger and Violet Laveen (Hudnall) Metzger.
Years later when he became a young man, he left Idaho and moved to Washington state where he met and later married Julie on Sep 2nd 1967, at 19 years of age.
Soon after in Feb 1968 he was drafted into the Army and went to training at Fort Polk, Louisiana, known as Tigerland, in their Advanced Infantry Training course. After graduating he shipped out to Vietnam and served as a Specialist Fifth Class. After he served for 2 years he was honorably discharged in Feb 1970.
Rodney and Julie had three children Sean, Shane and Shamus
who were raised in Washington.
Early in their marriage Rodney and Julie both found careers, Rodney worked in the Bremerton Shipyards as an Electroplater and Julie worked as Systems Analyst for Boeing in Renton. Rodney won many awards in various companies with his expertise in Electroplating and returned back to Civil Service and retired as a Electroplater.
Rodney is predeceased by both his parents who died in Lewiston, Idaho. His father Clyde died in 2006 at Age 84 and his mother Violet died in 2020 at age 95.
He will be remembered for his quiet, no nonsense down to earth demeanor and his wicked humor. He enjoyed the outdoors and fishing. He loved dogs, whiskey, growing vegetables and cooking. He will be missed by his family and those who knew him.
Rod had a small memorial service on 10 Oct 2021.
His final resting place will be in Riffe Lake in Morton Washington State where he wishes for his ashes to be spread.
