He was predeceased by: his wife Mary; his sons, Russell, Jr. and Michael Alan; his parents, Evelyn and Everett; and his brothers, Charlie, James, Gerald, George and Lowell.

He is survived by: his children, Julie Martin (Ron) of Somerset, WI, John Root of Altoona, WI, Dianne Root (Todd Fanetti) of Bloomer, WI, Joanne Woolf (Reagan) of Tehachapi, CA and Catherine Helland (Dan) of Eau Claire. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
