She was predeceased by: her parents, Robert Witt and Myrtle Witt (McFaul); her husband Donald Van Handel; her son Kenneth; her son-in-law Douglas Thorpe; and her siblings, Eunice Heberer (Cal), Lois Wilharms (Lester), Elaine Waldal (Oren) and James Witt.
She is survived by: her children, Dennis Van Handel (Pat), Kathy Watters (Roger), Margaret Thorpe-Haass (Al Haass), Doug Van Handel (Karie), Mary Van Handel and Mark Van Handel; her daughter-in-law LuAnn Van Handel; her grandchildren, Kim Acord (Mike), Mike Van Handel (Amy), Lisa Belonger (Kyle), Jana Schleis (Brian), Kris Van Handel (Jared Wildenradt), Carol Van Handel (Lukas Reischl), Andy Van Handel (Jennifer White), Jeff Van Handel, David Watters (Carlos Marin), Brenda Newman (Erich), Martin Thorpe (Andrew Akhaphong) and Nichole Wentzel (Josh); her stepgranddaughters, Laura Haass and Charlotte Toebe (Tyler); her great grandchildren, Madison, Noah, Lily Acord, Claire, Chloe Van Handel, Quinn, Cole Belonger, Lexi, Vera, Ezra Schleis, Conner Van Handel, Harper, Rex Newman, Amelia and Sophia Wentzel; and her sisters-in-law, Alice Van Handel, Jule Van Handel and Mary Witt. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established in Joan's name.
