He was predeceased by: his parents, Arnold Handel and Geraldine Van Handel (Kohl); his grandparents, Joseph, Mary Van Handel, Norman and Louise Kohl Sr. (Ertl); his in-laws, Eldor and Arvilla Gruetzmacher (Patri); and his stepmother-in-law Mary Gruetzmacher (Martin).
He is survived by: his wife Judy (Gruetzmacher); his son Joseph A. Van Handel (Cari); his grandchildren, Ethan J. and Rose J. Van Handel; his daughter Jessica J. Zitzelsberger (Brett); his grandchildren, Addisyn B. and Aubree L. Zitzelsberger; his siblings-in-law, Ronald E. Gruetzmacher (Vicki), Kenneth J. Gruetzmacher (Terri), Beverly J. Huettl (Gary) and Diane M. Sullivan (Dan); his close friends, Tom Bolwork (Mary), Steve Holmes, Hank Plautz (Jody), Kirby Cartwright, Matt Wheeler and Warren Johnson (Sue); and also Amanda. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, friends, cousins.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 23rd 2025 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the St. Pius X Catholic Church (500 W Marquette St, Appleton, WI 54911). A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, July 23rd 2025 at 11:30 AM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund is being established.
