He was predeceased by: his father Herbert Schmitz; and his grandsons, Christopher Tennyson, Clarence Tennyson IV and Mike Allender. He is survived by: his wife Gladys Riedl; his daughters, Linda Everson, Valerie McHugh (Tom), Connie Garvey (Don) and Virginia Schmitz; his grandchildren, Kim Waring (Mark), Eric Kettner (Mallory), Sheena Arndt (Erik), Linda Hasley (Jeff), Chase Kelly (Rachel), Tom Allender (Jen), Jake McHugh and Emily McHugh; his great grandchildren, Ty, Emmett, Sam, Amos, Landyn, Jocelynn, Charlotte and Lynken; his sister Marilyn Berndt; his sister-in-law Loretta Schmitz; his brother Don Schmitz; and his brother-in-law Victor Berndt. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers and other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund is being established.
