He was predeceased by: his parents, Palmer H. Nelson and Grace Ellen Nelson (Ogle); his sister Grace Lorraine Mayer; his brothers-in-law, Otto Norman Christopherson (Marian), Frederick "Fritz" Schmidt and Conrad Mayer; and his granddaughter Josafin Lloyd-Nelson.
He is survived by: his wife Anita Nelson (Christopherson); his children, Peter John Nelson (Toril Nelson), Nels Christopher Nelson (Sarah Lloyd), Kari Bjorg Nelson (Steven Argo) and Sigrid Nelson Helland (Patrick Helland); his grandchildren, Ingrid Nelson, Edith Nelson, Solveig Nelson Argo, Vannetta Grace Helland, Oliver Patrick Helland and Beatrice May Helland; his sister-in-law Joan Christopherson Schmidt; his nieces and nephews, Conrad Mayer, David Mayer, Steven Mayer, Mary Moore, Ingrid Beyer, Olaf Christopherson, Amy Christopherson, Anne Le Piane, Kristin Schmidt and Erik; and his friends, William Lyman Veech, Hiroshi, Arlene Kanno, Mel and Darlene Hackett.
In 2016, Don and Anita received a Community Builder Award, and in 2018, they were inducted into the Wisconsin Dells Education Foundation Hall of Fame, recognitions that meant a great deal to them.
