He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Herson and Lucy Herson (Corcoran); and his son Michael. He is survived by: his wife Julia E. Peters; and his children, John (Debbie), Kathryn (Peg Morsch), Andrew (Kelly), Patrick (Claire), Mary Herson-Roeser (Michael) and Thomas. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

He donated most of his library to St. Norbert College.
