He was predeceased by: his parents, Martin Smits and Rose Smits (Boehm); his son Stephen; his siblings, Stella Heaney (Charlie), Norbert Smits (Harriet), Isabel McMahon (Ellis), Sylvia Christensen (Quentin), Martin Smits (Alice) and AnnaMae Blazer (Bob); his father-in-law Leonard Gardebrecht (Maytie); and his siblings-in-law, Irene Ferroly (John), Roger Gardebrecht (Bess) and Dennis Gardebrecht.

He is survived by: his daughters, Lenore Kittell (Gary), Renee Douglas (Mike VanBoxel) and Lisa Stoller (Ben); and his sisters-in-law, Naomi Buchholz (LeRoy) and Grace Kelly (Mike). He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
