He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Smits and Nellie Smits (Bushmaker); his son Matthew; his siblings, Robert Smits (Betty) and Helen Smits; and his daughter-in-law Teresa Smits.

He is survived by: his wife Marlene Hougard; his children, Laurie Delvaux (Jeff), Mike Smits (Lisa) and Ellen Thuerwatcher; his grandchildren, Brenden Delzer, Nathan Thuerwatcher (Katie), Dustin Delvaux (Michelle), Jessica Smits, Devin Heger (Tim), Elizabeth Thuerwatcher (Katie) and Sam Smits; his great grandchildren, Briar, Lincoln Delvaux, Brayden, Jaylah, Isaiah and Contrell Smits; and his sister Ruth Rollin. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
