He was predeceased by: his parents, Neil Johnston and Vera Lewis Johnston (Erickson); his son-in-law Ken Vargas; his grandson Kai Vargas; and his brother Theodore Lewis.

He is survived by: his wife Mary Jane Lenox Lewis; his daughters, Beth Samuelson, Ann Vargas, Amy Paudler (Calvin) and Kate Gunderson (Paul); and his grandchildren, Sara, Shannon (Chris), Christina Paudler, Mary Hilda Samuelson, Noelani (Lev), Mailee Vargas, Mina, Anna Janae Micah (Nik), Titus and Trinity Gunderson.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Bethany Church.
