He was predeceased by: his parents, Morris Gierl and Caroline Gierl (Lehman); his brother David Gierl; his parents-in-law, Albert and Bernice Molinaro; and his sister-in-law Gail Molinaro.

He is survived by: his wife Kay Gierl; his children, Patricia Istvanek (Patrick), Charles Gierl (Sally), Gregory Gierl (Kathi Wendt) and Kristina Van Bogelen (Lawrence); his grandchildren, Daniel (Samantha), Michael, Kathryn, Joseph Istvanek, Matthew (Emily Orabutt), Paul (Leah Tirabassi), Geena, Kaylee Gierl, Alexander and Chloe Van Bogelen; his brothers, Robert (Patsy) and Richard Gierl (Kathy); and his brothers-in-law, Mark (Sharon) and Dean Molinaro (Patricia). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials made to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii Parish would be appreciated by the family.
