He is survived by : his wife Lynn Kempf; his children, Jamie Gaffke (Ruth Vater), Josh Gaffke (Jenny) and Lindsay Gitter (Adam); his grandchildren, Barney Vater-Gaffke, Theobald Vater-Gaffke, Alyce Gaffke, Leander Gaffke and Duncan Gitter; his siblings, Melodee Dorzak, Mark Gaffke (Carol) and Jolene Lang (Mike); and his sisters-in-law, LuAnn Potter (Tim), Carrie Copperud (Al), Pam Newhauser (Jeff), Lisa Perkins (Matt) and Holly Kempf. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

“I was very saddened to hear of Jim's passing today. I spent many memorable days with Jim as children. I always looked up to Jim, even though I was a little older, as someone who was the kind of person I strived to be. I haven't seen Jim in many years, but I will always remember his quick smile and kind heart. As I'm grieving now, the years seem to melt away, and I see Jim calling for me to go for a swim or a walk in the woods. My condolences to family. He is missed. Thomas Prust”
