He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Merfeld and Bernice Merfeld (Spah); his wife Shirley Bakkum (Bakkum); and his siblings, Thomas Merfeld, Lawrence "Herman" Merfeld, Mary Margaret, Corky Lounsbourgh and Geri Billis.
He is survived by: his daughter Shelly Jones (Alan) of La Crosse; his stepchildren, Cindy Nicol of La Crosse and Thomas Nicol of Sparta; his siblings, Paul "Pickle" Merfeld of La Crosse, David Merfeld (Sue) of New Hampshire and Kay Vigdahl of La Crosse; his grandchildren, Ryan and Rachel Jones of La Crosse; and his close friend Juanita Haag. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
