She was predeceased by: her siblings, Ralph Schams, Gerald Schams, Louise Bahr, Jeanette Longmire, Bill Schams and Vincent Schams; and her siblings-in-law, Bernard Bahr, Max Longmire, Louise Schams, Carol Schams and Lois Schams.

She is survived by: her husband Richard; her children, Nancy Wanek (Greg), Gary Arneson (Debbie), Janine Gage (Bob), Jill O'Keefe (Kevin), Rich Arneson (Diane), Brian Arneson, Mary Kube (Don), Jim Arneson (Diann Schmid), Meg McGrane (Mike), Vicky Grice (Gavin) and Tom Arneson (Vickie); her brothers, Donald Schams and Paul Schams (Judy); and her sister-in-law Shirley Schams.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to Saint Clare Health Mission, Salvation Army, and Holy Trinity.

“Such a wonderful woman. Joan was a dear neighbor to us and such a calming influence on this new Mom. She was available to advise me whether it be a fever or "yes, I think he will need stitches." She sat with our Steven when Al got those stitches and even did my dishes. She was a shining example to me of grace, patience and love especially to Rich, who for some reason our boys likened to Mr. Roger's. Her memory brings a smile, I will always remember "Vicky watch." Love and sympathy to all of you.”
