He is survived by: his children, Theresa Smerud (Scott), Barbara Bielat (Christopher), Donna Dudenhoefer (Mark) and Gary Messerschmidt (Rhonda); his foster sons, John Nielsen and Tom Oliver; his grandchildren, Anna Taylor (Mike), Aidan, Quinlan, Kristian Smerud, Emma Frayer (Anthony), Colin, Connor Bielat, Claire, Conrad, Mary Rose Dudenhoefer and Bauer Messerschmidt; his great grandchildren, Charlie and Oliver Taylor; his brother Harliss Messerschmidt; and his sister-in-law Cathy Messerschmidt of East Troy, WI..
