He was predeceased by: his parents, David Goodfriend and Theresa Goodfriend; his close friend Emeritus; his grandfather Adolph Hirschberg; and his significant other Mary Lou Birkett Goodfriend.

He is survived by: his sons, David (Susan Emmer) and Michael (Nancy Rodriguez); his grandsons, Benjamin, Ari, Noah and Elijah; his sisters, Ruth Urbach and Juliet Goodfriend; his nephews, Dan and Josh Urbach; and his sisters, Micah and Erica Zimmerman.

He won the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Heart Association in 2010 for his contributions to high blood pressure research.
