He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Gates and Maryann Peterik; his son Jeremy Ott; and his siblings, Mary Lee Konitzer, Lynne Scherer, Tammy Leiker and James Gates.

He is survived by: his siblings, Debbie Perry and Paul Gates; his grandchildren, Meghan Lopez and Jack Ott; his niece Emily Perry; and his nephew Anthony Hoffman. He is also survived by other nieces, nephews, and friends.
