He was predeceased by : his fathers, Jueline Smith (Autry) and James Ray Smith, Sr.; and his brother Tim Smith. He is survived by : his children, Deborah Dew of North Carolina, Joshua Smith of Merrill and John Smith of Wausau; his grandchildren, Brandyn Scott and Ciara Haas; and his siblings, Sherry Holgate of Baker City, Mike Smith of Gardnerville and Terry Holgate of Waterford, California. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
