He was predeceased by: his parents, Charlie McDowell and Emmaline McDowell; his children, Lavib Isaac, Melvin D. Givens Jr. and Steven C. Givens; his siblings, Carl McDowell, Floyd McDowell, Leroy McDowell, Ernest McDowell (Shirley), Clara Davis, Charles McDowell Sr. (Ovuida), Anna L. Brumfield, Ruth Helen Todd and Eddye LaVern; and his sisters-in-law, Cynthia McDowell and Draper Louise McDowell.
He is survived by: his daughter Antoinette; his wife Barbara J. McDowell; his daughters, Alnora Shumpert (Marton) and Antionette McDowell of Milwaukee, WI; his daughter-in-law Susa Givens of Milwaukee, WI; his brothers, Willie "Mac" McDowell of Tracy, CA, Jimmie Lee McDowell of Detroit and Robert Earl "Sonny" McDowell; his siblings-in-law, David Blakely (Victoria) of Caledonia, WI and Zelma Hudson of Detroit, MI; and his close friends, Willie and Annie Alexander. He is also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and loving friends.
