Edwin George Montgomery Jr. MD Obituary

Edwin George "Bud" Montgomery Jr., MD, of Mequon, Wisconsin, died peacefully at home on October 10, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 91.

Bud was born on October 9, 1935, at Mount Sinai Hospital in Milwaukee to Edwin and Helene (Lederer) Montgomery. He was a lifelong Milwaukee resident. He attended St. Robert School and Marquette University High School, then traveled east to the College of the Holy Cross. There he was editor of the school newspaper and graduated as valedictorian. He returned home for medical school at Marquette University School of Medicine (now the Medical College of Wisconsin), where he also edited the Marquette Medical Review. On August 13, 1960, he married Mary Jo McNamara of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania.

Bud spent his whole career as a pediatrician. After his residency at Milwaukee Children's Hospital, he opened a solo practice in Thiensville. He was later a founding partner of both Milwaukee Medical Clinic and Cedar Mills Medical Group. At Milwaukee Children's he founded the Adolescent Clinic and served as Chief of Staff, a role he also held at Columbia St. Mary's. He was a Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and served as President of the Milwaukee Academy of Medicine. Bud never stopped learning. Along with his medical degree, he earned a Master of Public Health from the University of California Berkeley, a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, and a Master of Bioethics from the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Bud's commitment to his community went well beyond his practice. He was President of the Mequon-Thiensville Board of Education, Mequon Health Commissioner, and Board Chair of Lad Lake. He co-founded Portal, inc., a nonprofit serving people with developmental disabilities, served on the board of Kathy's House, and was Vice President of the Underground Switchboard. He was also a member of the Traveling Medicine Show, which gave free medical care to concertgoers at venues across the Milwaukee area.

Bud and Mary Jo moved to Newcastle Place for their retirement years. There they made many new friends and reconnected with old ones. Bud also found time to rekindle his love of card games and became a regular at the bridge and sheepshead tables.

Later in life, travel became a passion, and he set foot on all seven continents. At home he was a devoted gardener, especially of his roses, and a lifelong dog lover. He was a loving and gentle grandfather who encouraged a love of learning, modeled generosity and kindness, and joyfully shared his love of sweets.

Bud is survived by his children, Mimi (Doug) Peterson, Chris (Jenny Putnam) Montgomery, Lisa Montgomery, Amy (Rob Longaker) Montgomery, and Katie (West) Johnson; his 11 grandchildren, Erin, Meghan, and Will Peterson; Michael Montgomery and Cal Hickey; Sourna and Sahm Daneshvar; Nick Longaker and Kelly McBrayer; and Bailey and Aidan Johnson; and his sister, Mary Montgomery Goulet. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Mary Jo, and by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Portal, inc. autismspeaks, or the charity of your choice.
