Darrell E. Standish Obituary

Passed away peacefully at his home on January 25, 2024 at the age of 72. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 50 ½ years Karen Standish (nee Gulbronson). Loving father of Geoff (Jennifer) Standish and Kristopher (Kathleen) Standish; proud grandfather of Caellum, Shae, Addison, Mallory, and Clara. He is further survived by other relatives and friends. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Anna Standish, brother Earl Jr., and sister Deborah Kreitlow.

Born in Milwaukee, he attended Hamilton HS where he met Karen. Darrell served aboard the USS Lang during the Vietnam war. He married Karen in April of 1973 and celebrated their 50th anniversary last April. Darrell graduated from UW Milwaukee, and worked as a software engineer at Johnson Controls for 25 years.

Baseball was Darrell's thing. He started coaching as soon as his kids were old enough to be on a team, coaching rec, select, and high school for over 25 years. He was active with the New Berlin Athletic Association (NBAA) for 30 years (Coach, President and Treasurer), the New Berlin Heat Select Baseball League (Founder, Coach and Treasurer), and the Wisconsin State Youth Baseball League (WSYBL) for about 20 years (Treasurer and Umpire Coordinator). Darrell was also instrumental in getting the baseball field at New Berlin West HS built. It was a labor of love. Once his coaching days were over, he got a job as an usher at Miller Park, saying that he got paid to watch baseball.

Darrell served on the New Berlin Park and Rec Commission, and in 2016, was named New Berlin's Citizen of the Year. In 2020, the Heat baseball field at Calhoun Park in New Berlin was renamed the Darrell Standish Field.

Darrell loved to travel, especially cruises, and he and Karen were able to cruise to Hawaii, Alaska and in Europe from Amsterdam to Budapest.

After 40 years in New Berlin, it was time to downsize, so he and Karen built a home in Mukwonago and moved there in 2018. In February of 2020, he received his official ALS diagnosis, bravely fighting this horrid disease for almost 4 years.
