He was predeceased by: his parents, Gottlieb Mertz and Rosella "Sally" Mertz (Biedenbender); his sons, Bryon and Wendell Mertz; his son-in-law Brian Krizenesky; his brother Harlen Mertz; his parents-in-law, Raymond and Ruth Aplin (Bettner); and his siblings-in-law, Janice Hartz (Harvey), Delores Knoespel (Willard), Betty Becker (Royal), Bonnie Monty, Eugene Aplin (Deloris), Jerome Aplin (Nancy) and James Aplin (Audrey).

He is survived by: his wife Darlene Mertz of Brillion; his great grandchildren, Lillianna, McKinley, Layna and Berkley; his sisters, Sandra Basler (LeRoy), Charlesburg, Darla Wagner (Mike) and Diana Mertz; and his siblings-in-law, Ursula Mertz and Kenneth Monty. He is also survived by Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jake's name to his family.
