He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Appleyard and Lillian Appleyard (Thoma); and his brothers, Melvin, William "Bill" and Dale.
He is survived by: his wife Martha "Martie" Buchholz of Sparta; his children, Vicki Appleyard-Korb (Glenn) of Edgerton, WI and Brent Appleyard of Grand Rapids, MI; his granddaughters, Sarah Thorn (Jayson) of Madison and Emily McGuire (Ryan) of Edgerton; his great grandchildren, Micah, Ella McGuire, Vincent and Alaina Thorn; and his siblings, Marian of Minneapolis, MN and Larry Appleyard (Eileen) of West Virginia.
