He was predeceased by: his parents, Russell Gatzke and Albertine Gatzke (Solem); his wife Bonnie Toya; and his brothers-in-law, Robert O'Rourke and Gary Regenfuss.

He is survived by: his children, Cory Gatzke of Superior and Kimberly Moore (Roger) of Superior; his grandchildren, Austin James and Nikolas Dean Moore; and his sister Janis O'Rourke of Duluth.

“you don't know me, but your father was a classmate. Jim was my first crush, he was such a good friend that i;ll let you in on a secret. He did all my typing test and assignments in high school. Even though I moved Jim and I always stayed in touch.. My last visit to Superior we had a nice visit at the nursing home. Jim had the greatest smile and false confidence. He loved your mom and you kids Kathy McIntyre Byrnes”
