He was predeceased by: his father Karl Hischke. He is survived by: his wife Melissa Wendt; his children, Matt (Sarah), Jeremy (Erica) and Amy Schroeder (Craig); his grandchildren, Daylen, Karissa, Karl, Natalie, Jackie and Lucas; and his siblings, Ken Hischke (Larae), Susie Wilber (Harvey) and Lori Hischke. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church in Hayes in Joel's honor.
