He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert C. Mattson and Shirley Mae Nelson; and his brothers, Jack Mattson and Mike Zinski. He is survived by: his daughter Dr. Kimberly; his grandchildren, Annie Urquides (Hunter) and Owen Czapiga; his great grandchildren, Phillip Bridger Urquides and Lyvie Urquides; his sisters, Sandy Waldrop and Debra Haveri; his former wife Debbie Dagsgard (John Mesko); and his close friend Ed Czapiga.
