“Johnny Durlin was my first hero. Our dads served together in the Navy, and our families reunited when they both retired in Wisconsin. Johnny was 7 years older than me, but he took me swimming in Waterford and shot hoops with me in Kewaunee. He was a wiry young man with a letterman’s jacket and I knew I wanted to be just like him. There are people you meet who become impossible to forget. They were not sent to you by accident, but instead to open doorways to a different version of your life.”
