He was predeceased by: his parents, George Karls and Elizabeth Karls (Hellenbrand); his son Phillip Karls; his son-in-law Tom Hess; his granddaughter Olivia Karls; his siblings, Helen Niesen (Lawrence), Alfred Karls (MaryAnn), Genny Greiber (Herman), Betty Laufenberg (Herb) and George Karls (Marilyn); and his siblings-in-law, Donald Endres, Lawrence Esser, Raphael Maerz and Mary Jane Esser.
He is survived by: his wife Virginia Karls; his children, Joy Kurt (Fred), Janice Hess, Russell Karls (Anna), Sharon Gallagher (Jerry), Larry Karls (Joan), Karen Quam (Bill) and Dale Karls (Carrie); his grandchildren, Tiffany Gitter (Jacob), Justin Hess (Ashley), Joshua Hess, Tamara Volz (Kyle), Audrey Savage (Michael), Bailey Gallagher (Creed Protheroe), Jesse Gallagher, Miranda Hellenbrand (Tony), Melinda McBride (Brad), Christina Karls, Tonya Oswald (Nate), Stacy Brockmann (Kyle), Kelly Stronach (Lucas), Hailey Krueger (Michael), Isabella Schack (Matthew) and Anthony Karls; his sister Lucille Endres; his sister-in-law Ruth Maerz; and his caregiver Monica. He is also survived by 18 great-grandchildren.
