He was predeceased by: his parents, Otto Helmke and Lorraine Helmke; his sister Linda Zander; and his grandparents, Edward, Ida Hansen and Emma Helmke.

He is survived by: his significant other Karen Zander; his daughters, Cindy Danz and Holly Tierney; his grandchildren, Zachary and Lindsay Jo Tierney; his siblings, Joan Grosse (David) of Waunakee, Edward Helmke (Sheila) of Cross Plains and Gary Helmke of Middleton; and his brother-in-law Walter Zander of Reedsburg. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family asks memorial donations in Joel's name to the UW Organ and Tissue. Donation program.
