He was predeceased by : his parents, John Grunert and Mary Grunert; and his wife Eleanor Grunert (Klump). He is survived by : his daughter-in-law Terrie; his son Michael Grunert (Terrie); his stepchildren, Douglas Scharp (Diane) and Joyce Chabot (Ernest); his grandchildren, Paul Scharp (Alexandrea), Justin Grunert (Amy), Stephanie Grunert, James Grunert (Rachel) and Allen Grunert; and his siblings, Neal Grunert (Joyce), JoAnne Bogan and Molly Meyer. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Wishspell wrote a sympathy message

“Sorry to hear about your father, Michael. This is Diane, I live out in horicon now , bought a home back in 2001. I liked your dad, he was always a nice guy and he was nice to me. If you ever want to give me a call, my number is 920-643-7124. I lost both of my parents too. I lost my dad in 2005 and I lost my mom here at my home, I took care of her until she passed. I had hospice in my home. I miss you, I never married or dated after our relationship. We are both older now, things have changed.”
