He was predeceased by: his parents, George III (Helen Shaw Thorngate) and Liuhe; his wife Beverly Burdick Thorngate; his brothers, George Thorngate IV, David Thorngate and Philip Thorngate; his in-laws, Russell, Dora Burdick, Marjorie, Wayne Munns and Joan Case; and his great grandchild Cora Jane Thorngate-Gales.
He is survived by: his children, Diane Griffith (Paul), Stephen Thorngate II (Lisa), Patricia Thorngate and Russell Thorngate. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren; and eighteen great-grandchildren.
