He was predeceased by : his parents, Mark Haymond Smith and Christine Bare Smith; his former life partner Thelma Barnes Smith; his wife Betty Lee Pinnell Smith; and his brothers, Mark Smith, Herbert Smith and Robert Smith.

He is survived by : his sons, John Gregory (Elizabeth) and Stuart Edward (Cheryl); his stepchildren, Michael Scott Pinnell and Kathy Ann Pinnell Boone; his siblings, Jack Smith, Mary Ellen Raines and Ida Lee Gosik; and his grandchildren, Adam Kramer Smith, Rachel Christine Prouty, Nathan Glen Smith, Samuel Isaac Smith, Mijkalena Smith and Zebulon M. Smith. He is also survived by nine great-grandchildren.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in John's memory to the First Baptist Church of Fairlea, 9146 Seneca Trail, Ronceverte, WV 24970.

“Condolences and prayers for all of Mr. John's loved ones. He was indeed a kind-hearted and hard working man. I was blessed to have him as a neighbor for over ten years and enjoyed visiting across our yards and in the home of Betty and John.
