He was predeceased by : his parents, James Elmer and Gladys Mae Pettry Birchfield; and his siblings, James and Madeline. He is survived by : his children, Samuel Charles and Sue Ratliff (James); his grandchildren, Donnie, Jennifer, Sam, James, Joshua and Jesse; and his great grandchildren, Donnie, David, Carol Ann, Marley, Abigail, Kailyn and Jesse Jr..

Visitation was held on Saturday, May 4th 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Melton Mortuary Chapel (1200 Harper Rd, Beckley, WV 25801). A funeral service was held on Saturday, May 4th 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the same location. A burial was held on Saturday, May 4th 2024 at 3:00 PM at the Oak Grove Cemetery (273 Oak Grove Rd, Beckley, WV 25801).
